How Business Days Are Counted

For each day between the start and end date, the calculator checks whether the day of the week is Monday (1) through Friday (5). Saturday (6) and Sunday (0) are skipped.

Business Days = Total Calendar Days − Weekend Days

Practical Applications

Contracts & legal deadlines — notice periods, response windows, and cure periods are typically expressed in business days.

Payment terms — Net 30 or Net 15 often means calendar days, but some invoices specify business days. Confirm before calculating due dates.

Shipping & fulfilment — e-commerce and logistics SLAs almost always use business days for transit and handling time estimates.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a business day?
A business day is any weekday that is not a public holiday — typically Monday through Friday. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are excluded. This calculator excludes weekends but does not account for public holidays, which vary by country and region.
Do public holidays count as business days?
By default, this calculator treats all weekdays as business days. Public holidays are not automatically excluded because they differ by country, state, and industry. If you need to exclude specific holidays, subtract them from the result manually.
How are business days used in shipping and delivery estimates?
Carriers like FedEx, UPS, and USPS typically quote delivery times in business days. A package shipped on Thursday with a 3 business day estimate would arrive on Tuesday (skipping Saturday and Sunday).
How do legal and financial contracts define business days?
Most contracts specify business days to exclude weekends, and often explicitly list jurisdictional public holidays as non-business days. Always read the contract's definition carefully — some define 'banking days' which may exclude additional holidays.
Can I add business days to a start date?
Yes. The second mode of this calculator adds a specified number of business days to any start date and tells you the resulting end date. This is useful for calculating deadlines, due dates, and contract milestones.
